CONGRATULATIONS TO:
• Brother Erminus Joseph (Baltimore District) who celebrated his 100th birthday on January 24, 2004 at De LaSalle Hall, Lincroft; Brother Joseph is the oldest Brother in the Institute.
• Brother Louis DeThomasis on his appointment as the founding President of De LaSalle University, a new Lasallian institution of higher education being established by the District of San Francisco in Roseville, a suburb of Sacramento. Brother Louis will complete his 21st year as the President of St. Mary’s University of Minnesota at the conclusion of the 2004-2005 academic year and move on to his new leadership responsibility.
• Father Joseph Parkes, S.J., Headmaster of Fordham Prep, on his appointment as the founding President of Cristo Rey High School, New York; the new high school will open in September 2004 in a building owned by St. Cecilia parish on East 106th St., NYC.
• The Lancer Association-the Alumni Society of the former St. Augustine Diocesan High School, Brooklyn. The Society has announced that the stained glass windows from the Brothers’ chapel at St. Augustine will be installed in the student chapel at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. The window project is the first phase in a plan to create the St. Augusine Lancer Hall of Fame at Loughlin. The project, a work in progress, will consist of the St. Augustine Alumni Chapel, memorabilia display cases, a statue of St. Augustine and a portrait of St. Augustine High School.

• Brother Antonio Botana, Secretary for Lasallian Association in the International Institute, who will be visiting the LI-NE District on February 4-6, 2004. Brother Antonio plans to visit the Martin de Porres School and Group Homes and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School.

• Brother Lawrence Goyette, having completed his sabbatical, has joined the St. Peter Claver Community, Brooklyn, and will be engaged in ministry at The De LaSalle School, Freeport and the Martin de Porres School, Springfield Gardens, for the second semester.
• All LI-NE communities will soon receive a copy for each Brother of Brother Alvaro’s 2004 Pastoral Letter Associated with the God of the Poor - Our consecrated life in the light of the 4th vow and Father Joseph Creedon’s (Joe is a former faculty member of La Salle Academy, Providence, and the current pastor of Christ the King parish in Kingston, RI) Lenten booklet The Giving Heart.
• Paulist Press announced that a new book, John Baptist De LaSalle: The Spirituality of Christian Education, will be available on March 1, 2004. Edited and introduced by Carl Koch, Brother Jeffrey Calligan and Brother Jeffrey Gros, the text is a new volume in the Classics of Western Spirituality series. It makes available to a broad readership a selection of the core writings of De La Salle whose reforms continue to influence the way young people are educated. The book is dedicated to Brothers Luke Salm, Augustine Loes and John Johnston, all of whom have had an impact on the promotion of the Lasallian mission around the world (excerpted from Midwest District News Notes).
• The 2004 World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8, 2004. A USCCB website, www.consecratedlife.org, provides recommended ideas for liturgy and prayer services to mark the day on the local level.
• Centro Educativo St. John Baptist De La Salle in Homestead, Florida is organizing a “marching band” for its students, the children of migrant worker families. If any school has some marching band instruments that they no longer use please contact Maria Isabel Medina at isabelmg@univision.com.

• Mrs. Carmela Montedoro, the sister-in-law of Brother Ralph Montedoro of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft.
• Sister Ruth Kenney, RSM, who died on January 5, 2004; Sister Ruth served as principal of the Girls’ Division of the former Mater Christi Diocesan High School and as librarian at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School.
• Sister Martha Serbst, RSM, who died on January 17, 2004; Sister Martha served as principal for thirty-five years at Woodlawn Catholic Regional School in Pawtucket and was a dear friend to many of the Brothers who lived in the Woodlawn community.
• Mr. Leo Marsh, the father of Brother Leonard Marsh, who died on January 26, 2004 in Florida at the age of 90.
• Mrs. Cordella Williams, the mother of Arty Williams and mother-in-law of Betty Williams, who died on Monday, January 26, 2004. Arty and Betty a both on the faculty of Martin de Porres School.
• Mrs. Irene Lackey, the mother of Brother Thomas Lackey (Auxiliary Visitor – New York District), who died on January 28, 2004.

• Brother William Kemmerer (hip surgery) and Brother Vincent Pelletier (tendon repair surgery) who are recovering well.

MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE PLAN
The Diocese of Worcester, Massachusetts, has assigned to the LI-NE District four (4) parishes at which we may make a mission appeal in 2004. Normally the appeals are on a weekend from June to September.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Call or e-mail (dcasey@cbc.necoxmail.com)
Once again Brothers James Brennan and Raymund Davey will make the appeals at the three parishes assigned to us by the Diocese of Providence.
