This Lasallian Youth Manual is dedicated to the memory of Brother Thomas Clark, F5C. Tom passed from this life on January 19, 1995, at the age of 35. For many of us, Tom represented the founding of Lasallian Youth in the United States. His dedication to serving young people was always an inspiration. Tom wrote the following as he was preparing his master's degree:
As I reflect on the experience of working with the young people of the Lasallian Youth movement in our country, I hold two things to be true. First, the Lasallian Youth movement is a movement which belongs primarily to the young people themselves. While the adults (both the lay persons and the Christian Brothers) who are involved have an important role to play as companions to these young people, it is the youth of Lasallian Youth who are primarily responsible for shaping the movement. We adults are invited to see the Spirit working in and through them, and to respond faithfully and gratefully. Secondly, the Lasallian Youth movement, like other instances of association and collaboration between the laity and religious orders, is a part of a new reality which is emerging in the Church and which, I believe is engendered by the Spirit. This reality is marked by an affirmation of our common baptismal vocation as followers of Jesus and ministers of the Gospel and a sharing of the unique gifts of both lay and religious for the good of the entire community."
Tom touched the lives of many young people In the words of one whom Tom touched, "By Brother Tom sharing the story of St. John Baptist de La Salle with me, I have come to believe in God. De La Salle has changed my life forever."
Tom's wit, intelligence, and love for life touched so many. Embodying the spirit of the living God, Tom's life had meaning. He made God's loving presence a reality for all, especially young people. May this manual be a source of encouragement to all who use it. and may it be a testimony to the memory of our friend and Brother Tom Clark
