To achieve the purposes of a school, the Brothers foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual enrichment among all members of the educational community. They help each one to fulfill their specific role; students, parents, teachers, priests, alumni and friends. RULE art.17b
The spiritual gifts which the Church has received in St. John Baptist de La Salle go far beyond the confines of the Institute which he founded. The Institute sees the existence of the various Lasallian movements as a grace from God renewing its own vitality. The Institute can associate itself with lay people who want to lead the life of perfection that the Gospel demands by living according to the spirit of the Institute and by participating in its mission. RULE art.146
John Baptist de La Salle and his first disciples were acutely aware of the social problems of their times. Struck by the educational needs of society around them, their response was to found schools. As true disciples of Jesus Christ, they made them places where the "SPIRIT OF CHRISTIANITY" could flourish. LLF pg.8
As disciples of De La Salle, we have a source of wealth that enables us at the same time to stand for and actively promote unity, peace, dialogue and hope among groups of people and individuals especially among those who are young. LLF pg.9
If one examines the 300 years of Institute history, one can see how this heritage has borne fruit; how it has benefited those outside the Brothers' communities; how has benefited from the contribution of lay people; and how it has adapted to successive periods of history and to a diversity of cultures. LLF pg.13
An important part of the Lasallian Heritage is its unceasing willingness to adapt, to become involved and to learn from one's surroundings, in order to operate schools offering a high standard of education and effective evangelization. LLF pg.14
Characteristics of Lasallian Spirituality:
A) The spirit of faith and zeal-- we live our lives as men and women guided by faith in the very context of school life, as an integral part of the educational community. We learn to see the hand of God in the events of our lives, and His call to us.
B) Faith which is based on the Gospel-- De La Salle's insistence on seeing everything in the light of the Gospel, an attitude sustained by constantly reading the Word of God, explains why daily reflection and remembering the holy presence of God were considered so important.
C) Faith and evangelization based on the community-- to be able to promote effectively both human and Gospel values, we have to be seen to practice what we preach. We must work closely together; each person must support our goals by personal commitment to their fulfillment.
D) Special concern for the poor
E) Willingness to be accessible to all -- in a world where the pursuit of wealth is becoming more frenetic it is essential for us to develop a way of thinking and acting which reflects total availability and lack of self-seeking. LLF pp.15-18
Description of a Lasallian:
1. One who is guided by faith who looks upon everything with the eyes of God; who looks upon the vocation to be a Christian as a call to personal sanctity.
2. One who works with others "together and by association." LLF pg.19

De La Salle' spiritual teaching has a profoundly unifying thrust; its effect is to raise up men who live according to the Spirit; men captivated by God and filled with zeal; poor men who base their lives on the gift of God and who in turn proclaim the saving love of God to the poor. AGP pg.219
